Stephen Wilson  (b.1944, St. Louis, USA)

Artist, researcher, art theorist. Graduated from the Chicago School of the Art Institute (MFA, Art and Technology/Performance). In 1972 obtained his PhD degree from the University of Chicago, Department of Educational Psychology and Interdisciplinary Social Sciences. Creates installations focused on science and emerging technologies ranging from interactive media and telecommunications to art and biology. Author of such projects as «Demon Seed» (SIGGRPAH Art Show, Anaheim, 1987), «Is Anyone There?» (SIGCHI, Monterrey, 1993; SIGGRAPH, Chicago, 1993; Ars Electronica, Linz, 1993), «Memory Map» (SIGCHI, Boston, 1995; DATA/DADA Show, Baltimore, 1995), «Crime-Z-Land» (San Francisco Arts Commission, San Francisco, 1998), «Body Surfing» (SFSU Art Gallery, San Francisco, 2000), «TransitTime» (Exploratorium, San Francisco, 2002), «Protozoa Games» (BEAP, Perth Australia, 2004), «Traces of Culture» (FILE 2005 show, Sao-Paulo, 2005), «IntroSpection» (Digital Body Show, ICA, London, 2006) and others. Has published several books on art and new technologies, incl. «Using Computers to Create Art» (Prentice Hall, 1986), «Multimedia Design with HyperCard» (Prentice Hall, 1991), «World Wide Web Design Guide» (Hayden Books, 1995), «Information Arts: Intersections of Art, Science, and Technology» (MIT Press, 2002), «Border Watch: Artists Working at the Frontiers of Research» (working title, Thames & Hudson, 2009). Between 1990-1993 was Consultant of the Catalyst Project (National Science Foundation, USA). Participated in international conferences on electronic arts in Northern and South America, Europe and Asia. In 1996 was invited to take part in Copenhagen'96 Cultural Capital of Europe activities to hold a workshop for Scandinavian artists. Golden Nica Award Winner, Ars Electronica International Competition for Interactive Art (1993, Austria). Currently is Professor in the Department of Art at the San Francisco State University
