Verena Kaminiarz (b.1978, Hannover, Germany)
Artist. Graduated in 2002 with a BFA from the Emily Carr Institute of Art and Design (Vancouver, BC) and an MSc (Biological Arts) in 2008 from the University of Western Australia (Perth). She uses biomedical technologies in her work and focuses on bio and gene engineering research in a contemporary social context. Kaminiarz has shown her works in contemporary art exhibitions, such as A Short Stranger Will Soon Enter Your Life (Crying Room Artist Run Space, Vancouver, 2002), WAR: A Drawing Show (Fred and Jock Gallery, Vancouver, 2004), Catalog (in collaboration with R.Terrada, the Contemporary Art Gallery, Vancouver, 2004), Launch Exhibition (Centre for Arts & Genomics, Amsterdam, 2005), False Start (AEDC project space, Berlin, 2006), Deeper Depression (Parkingallery, Teheran, 2006), Still, Living (Biennale Electronic Art Perth, Perth, 2007) and Biological Imperative (Gallery Affero, New Jersey, 2008). She has participated in contemporary art conferences, including Biotechnology and Art (The Arts Catalyst, London, 2005), Metaphors and Misunderstandings (the University of Western Australia, Perth, 2006), Still, Talking: A SymbioticA Symposium (Biennale Electronic Art Perth, Perth, 2007) and Art as Research: Figurations of Knowledge (SLSA Biannual European Conference, Berlin, 2008). Kaminiarz has developed several long-term art initiatives, including AEDC Context & Inquiry (since 2001) and CAMVAS: Collecting Collective (Vancouver, since 2004). As artist and assistant, she participated in Yulia Andreeva’s VJ Fleet (Vancouver, 2003), VJ Fleet Dub (Viper Festival, Basel, 2004). Kaminiarz lives and works in Vancouver (Canada) and Berlin (Germany).
