Philip Ross (b.1966, New York, USA)
Artist, researcher, curator. Graduated with a BFA in 1991 from the Art Institute (San Francisco) and MFA in 2000 from Stanford University (Palo Alto, California). He has been making research-based artworks, placing natural systems within a frame of social and historic contexts. Ross has taken part in group exhibitions at New Langton Arts, GenArt, the Exploratorium, and Yerba Buena Center for the Arts (San Francisco), Oakland Museum (Oakland), Kiber Lab (Maribor), New Image Art (Los Angeles), Gallery Kapelica (Ljubljana), Foxy Production (New York), Andalusian Centre of Contemporary Art (Seville), and in festivals such as the Biennial of Electronic Arts (Perth, 2004), Break Festival (Ljubljana, 2005), ISEA (San Jose, 2006), amongst others. He is author of numerous articles on bio-art, published in contemporary art magazines such as: Leonardo (2004), Ramp (2004), Nada (2005) and Make (2006). Ross acted as curator of Watercolor Competition (Radical Space, San Francisco, 2001), Chlorophilia (the Exploratorium, San Francisco, 2002), Out Of Line (Stanford Art Gallery, Stanford University, 2003) and BioTechnique (Yerba Buena Center for the Arts, San Francisco, 2007). He has hosted and participated in numerous panel discussions and has lectured in various institutions such as the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (Troy, NY), Chicago Art Institute (Chicago), San Jose State University (San Jose), the University of Western Australia (Perth), the University of Ljubljana (Ljubljana). Ross has been an artist in residence at The Exploratorium (San Francisco) and SymbioticA (Perth). He was a recent Porter Fellow at the University of California (Santa Cruz), and is the professor of sculpture at the University of San Francisco (California, USA).
