
Paul Thomas (b.1950, Lincolnshire, UK)
Artist, researcher, curator. Graduated in 1996 with an MA from the University of Western Sydney and in 2005 with a PhD from the University of Western Australia (Perth). His research focuses on the boundaries between art, science and new technologies. Thomas developed the Studio for Electronic Faculty of Built Environment Art and Design, Curtin University of Technology (Perth, Australia). He is the Founder and Director of the Biennale of Electronic Arts in Perth, Australia (2000-2005). In 1981, he founded the alternative artistic space, Media-Space; the works created here have been presented at various contemporary art exhibitions in Australia and New Zealand. Thomas’ works have been exhibited in several solo shows at the Bridge Gallery (Perth, 1988), Perth Institute of Contemporary Arts (Perth, 1991, 1995), the Praxis Gallery (Freemantle, 1993), YZ Gallery (the University of Western Sydney, 1994), the Verge Gallery (Perth, 1996), Experimenta E~Media Gallery (Melbourne, 1997), Perth Institute of Modern Art (Brisbane, 1998) and Australian Centre for Contemporary Art (Melbourne, 1998). He has taken part in contemporary art group exhibitions and conferences in Australia, New Zealand, Italy, Sweden, the Czech Republic, UK and the USA. He is author of numerous articles on contemporary art such as Reconfiguring space (2004), The mirror as the primal space for new media (2005), Contemplating contemporary architecture (2006), Boundaryless nanomorphologies (2007). Thomas is currently Director of Curtin Mineral and Chemistry Research Precinct Public art project; the project was implemented in collaboration with the Nano Research Institute of Curtin University of Technology and SymbioticA lab of the University of Western Australia (Perth).
