
Leonel Moura (b.1948, Lisbon, Portugal)
Artist, researcher. His research focuses on the link between art, robotics and artificial intelligence, creating interactive systems. Moura has participated in over 30 international solo exhibitions. His robotic works have been exhibited in several museums and galleries, including Museu de Historia Natural (Lisbon), Stedelijk Museum (Amsterdam), The American Museum of Natural History (New York), Museu Arqueologico do Carmo (Lisbon), Frederic Giroux Gallery (Paris), Antonio Prates Gallery (Lisbon), Ram Galerie (Rotterdam), Palazzo delle Arti (Napoli) and in festivals such as Artbots (New York, 2004; Gent, 2006), Artech (Lisbon), Flash Art Show (Bologna), the Biennale of Contemporary Art in Valencia (2003) and the Triennale of Architecture in Lisbon (2007). Moura has taken part in international contemporary art conferences, among them: Universite de Nanterre (Nanterre), Universite Pierre et Marie Curie (Paris), Accademia di Brera (Milan), Erasmus Universiteit Rotterdam (Rotterdam), Fundacion el Monte (Seville), Fundacion del ICO (Madrid), Centro Cultural de Belem (Lisbon) and FRAC Centre (Tours). He has published several books and catalogues, including Impossibilite/Impossibilidade (Ed. Nouveau Musee/Institut, 1995), Anarquista com motorista (Ed. Fenda, 1998), Les hommes poubelles (Ed. Grasset/Moulat, 2000), Architopia, art architecture science (Ed. CM Cascais, 2002), Formigas, vagabundos e anarquia (Ed. AAAL, 2003), Man+robots: symbiotic art (Ed. Institut d'Art Contemporain, 2004), Bioart: A new kind of art (Ed. Galeria Antonio Prates, 2005) and Potlatch (Ed. Fenda, 2006). In 2007, the Robotarium X opened in Alverca (Spain). Created by Moura, it is the first zoo dedicated to robots and artificial life.
